Water-Product Ratio

Typical Water to Product Ratios for Food Handling Pumps:

PRODUCT

WATER/PRODUCT RATIO

Potatoes

1.5 Gallons per pound of product

String Beans

3 Gallons per pound of product

Peas

1 Gallon per pound of product

Fruit

2 Gallons per pound of product

Fish

2 Gallons per pound of product

Nuts

1 Gallon per pound of product

Olives

1.5Gallons per pound of product

Cherries

2 Gallons per pound

When pumping food, not only is the water to product ratio important but so is the line velocity. Line velocity should be maintained at a given level in order to keep the product from dragging along the bottom of the pipe.  For horizontal runs of pipe, the ideal line velocity is 4.5 to 5.5 ft/sec; for vertical runs of pipe, the ideal line velocity is 6 to 8 ft/sec.
